Alan Riding 1943 - 2026
Over Cuba, Mexico eventually found itself completely alone in the regional body [OAS]. To some extent, President López Mateos reacted to the sympathy stirred by the 1959 Cuban Revolution among Mexican leftists and nationalists. But he was also following tradition by challenging Washington's application of the Monroe Doctrine to justify its new intervention in the region. In April 1961, the abortive Bay of Pigs invasion provoked strong protests in Mexico (even the aging President Cárdenas offered to help defend the island). In 1962, Mexico and five other countries opposed an OAS resolution suspending Cuba from the organization for "exporting" revolution to Venezuela. Two years later, Mexico was the only country to ignore a mandatory OAS resolution ordering all members to break relations with the Castro regime. Between 1964 and 1970, when Chile's new Allende government recognized the Castro regime, Mexico was Cuba's only formal link to Latin America.

Calvin Tomkins 1925 - 2026
Calvin Tomkins: Something I've been wondering about is your general attitude toward science. Isn't your own work influenced by science?
Marcel Duchamp: No. Ironically, yet. It's an ironic way of giving a pseudo-explanation of it. I don't believe in the explanation, so I have to give a pseudo one: pseudo-scientific. .. Even the idea of perspective was a sort of forcing myself to be at the service of a scientific idea, to get away from the free hand, as I often said... When I came to do my Chocolate Grinder I used perspective to design it, so that the form wouldn't be dictated by my taste at all. It was forced on me by perspective.

James Petras 1937 - 2026
".. Noam Chomsky is an icon of what stands for the US anti-war movements and intellectual dissent. That he has chosen to absolve the pro-Israel lobby and its affiliated groups and media auxiliaries is an important political event, especially when questions of war and peace hang in the balance, and when the majority of Americans oppose the war. Giving a 'free ride' to the principal authors, architects, and lobbyists in favor of the war is a positive obstacle to achieving clarity about whom we are fighting and why. To ignore the pro-Israel Lobby is to allow it a free hand in pushing for the invasion of Iran and Syria. Worse, to distract from its responsibility by pointing to bogus enemies is to weaken our understanding not only of the war, but also the enemies of freedom in this county. Most of all it allows a foreign government a privileged position in dictating our Middle East policy, while proposing police state methods and legislation to inhibit debate and dissent. Let me conclude by saying that the peace and justice movements, at home and abroad, are bigger than any individual or intellectual - no matter what their past credentials.
"Yesterday the major Zionist organizations told us whom we may or may not criticize in the Middle East, today they tell us whom we may criticize in the the United States, tomorrow they will tell us to bend our heads and submit to their lies and deceptions in order to engage in new wars of conquest at the service of a morally repugnant colonial regime." (180-181)
Michael Parenti 1933 - 2026
Most of his primary works can be downloaded here and here, with some omissions such has his 1962 Yale dissertation Ethnic and Political Attitudes: A Depth Study of Italian Americans, published in 1975 for Arno Press' 38-volume The Italian American Experience series, but of course Piri' Miri Muli' has you covered:
"Even the Italian's religion suffered from alien adulteration. In architecture and ambience, the church facade and interior bore little resemblance to the old village chiesa. Near the altar, where the immigrant may expect to be comforted by statues of Santa Lucia, Sant' Antonio or other dearly loved celestial patrons, he would be startled by the presence of Saint Patrick stepping on snakes. The lay ceremonies, festas, and semi-pagan rituals and superstitions that were either doctrinally forbidden or peripheral to Catholicism but central to the peasant's way of religion were nowhere to be found." (27-28)

The end of the Bad Bunny perf reminded me of the end of "Plástico" by Rubén Blades, whom he's performed with and who's defended him amid recent attacks.. "De una raza unida, la que Bolívar soñó".. (at the 5:52 mark below)...
+ Che Guevara's Motorcycle Diaries when he speaks at the leper colony of San Pablo de Loreta, Peru, faithfully reenacted in the film version..
"But there is something more. Within a few days we will be leaving Peruvian territory so these words have the secondary intention of being a farewell, and I would like to stress our gratitude to all the people of this country, who have unfailingly shown us their warmest hospitality since we entered Peru via Tacna.
"I would also like to say something else, unrelated to the theme of this toast. Although our insignificance means we can’t be spokespeople for such a noble cause, we believe, and after this journey more firmly than ever, that the division of [Latin] America into unstable and illusory nations is completely fictional. We constitute a single mestizo race, which from Mexico to the Magellan Straits bears notable ethnographical similarities. And so, in an attempt to rid myself of the weight of small-minded provincialism, I propose a toast to Peru and to a United Latin America."

El cruel e ilegal ataque a Cuba se lo debe enfrentar actuando de forma colectiva. El truco de Trump es el bilateralismo: aprovechar las tremendas asimetrías para intimidar a los países uno por uno.

The tragedy is that China - a country on another continent - is still trying to help, while nobody in our own continent is lifting a finger for Cuba. Regional solidarity is possible and has protected sovereignty in LatAm before, but now most govts are captured. Divide & rule.
